Introduction – Solving Problems in Technical Communication

I enjoyed that the Introduction explained so much about the information the book would cover as well as how the book would be structured. I found this Introduction portion of the book to be really informative and it gave me hope that I would not have any issues using this book.

An item I found interesting that was discussed in the Introduction was the word “heuristics” as this is a word with which I am unfamiliar. Upon reading more about “heuristics” I like to think of the definition in terms of “how one plans to tackle a problem.” I can liken this to when an attorney I work with asks me to generate a document I have not yet worked on before. That would be my concrete problem. The heuristic I would apply would consist of researching if there are any documents that I can find to use as a guideline and trying to find out as much about this document on my own as possible. If I am unable to find any guideline, I am fortunate enough that I have access to an assistant on staff that I can ask. I can take my findings and seek her guidance, then work through the document and get it on file with the court.

The phase I am most looking forward to learning about is the Understanding Field Approaches phase. I am always interested in learning more about research methods, and tips and tricks. It is my understanding that we will be learning about conducting research and different aspects of project management; both of which I find highly interesting. Research is a common task in my job, and while it may not seem hard or exciting, it is a task that must be performed thoroughly and with care. Research can be tricky in my opinion because there may a resource that should have been searched that was not found. If one is not thorough and misses an item which should have researched but was not or was missed, that could be a very costly mistake to the attorney for which the research is being performed.

A phase I am also interested in learning about is Situating the Field. It appears that it will talk about technical communication historical information; a discussion of where technical communication has been. I look forward to learning how technical communication came to be. This phase also appears that it will discuss where technical communication is going. I would find a discussion regarding the future of technical communication to be very interesting, because it is a field which is so adaptable and applicable to many industries. I understand that this section will also cover theories of technical communication, which interests me. I am also interested in learning about using past lessons and applying them to what is currently necessary, as well as any information regarding the use of work tools.

I like that all the chapters are structured in the same format with all the sections being the same. It is my hope that this will make the textbook easier to follow and use.

I am also surprised how many I enjoyed the introduction and first chapters in this book. I had no idea how relateable and easy to follow this book would be. I liked that you discussed how research is important in your current role.
